Belfast Cardiac Surgery team do 9 life saving operations in Nigeria!

The team from the Cardiac Surgery Unit, lead by Mr OC Nzewi, are curretly visiting Nigeria. The trip organised by the Save A Heart charity are supporting local doctors and nurses in performing cardiac surgery. The pictures show some of the team and the equipment that they are taking with them at Belfast Airport. We wish them a safe journey and successful trip.

Sister Karen has just updated us as follows:

Save A Heart. Day 6 ! Operation number 9, double valve with sick heart .Team rising to the challenges which are significant, still keeping going with early mornings and late nights but exhausted. Pictured here in our cloth Save A Heart team theatre hats that I made for them. This is the last operating day (hopefully) but 9 in a week is amazing with equipment failures/ shortages of sterile disposable supplies and sutures and running low on heart valves. Staff in the rest of the hospital have been on strike so blood availability and lab work is proving to be challenging! It’s still good craic, you would just love it ( and hate it in equal measure lol!!) . K
