Cardiothoracic Surgery is surgery of the heart (Cardiac) and the chest, including surgery of the lungs, chest wall and mediastinum (Thoracic). We are the only Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit in Northern Ireland. We are based in the Royal Victoria Hospital and this is the only place you will be able to see and treat patients with surgical conditions of the heart and chest. We treat patients with lung cancer, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, thoracic aortic aneurysms, emphysema, chest trauma amongst other conditions – you will never be bored!
Opportunities are available in:
Ward Nursing – On Ward 5a, the Cardiothoracic ward, you could be looking after patients pre and post major cardiac and thoracic surgery and patients with chest injuries and other conditions
Theatre Nursing – You could be part of the theatre teams performing cardiac and thoracic surgery.
Intensive Care Nursing – You could be fully trained in all aspects of Critical Care Nursing and look after patients who have had open heart surgery in both the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit and the High Dependency Unit.
You could focus on one of the above areas, or take the opportunity to rotate through the areas to broaden your knowledge and experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery. You do not need any additional experience post-qualification as we will train you fully in one of the above areas.
